Ship / Yacht Building

Lowering the center of gravity by reducing weight above the water line has always been a priority for marine architects, but it is becoming ever more important as the cost of fuel and the performance expectations of sailing vessels rises. Reducing weight up high decreases the need for underwater stabilization devices and increases efficiency and speed.

HONYLITE sandwich structures are making a big difference reducing weight above the water line, and they are well-suited to the challenging and corrosive marine environment. We have supplied solutions for cruising, racing and motor yachts, high-speed ferries, offshore and in-shore lifeboats, Coast Guard and Navy vessels and even rowing shells.

At HONYLITE our strength lies in our ability to specify and apply a range of sandwich structures and processes depending on the application. We have the expertise to employ the right materials for demanding marine applications.

Benefits of using Honeycomb Panels:

Stronger and Lighter
The core increases the flexural stiffness of a sandwich panel used in hulls, decks and bulkheads by effectively increasing the distance between the two stress skins, much like an I-beam. Honeycomb cores also effectively provide shear resistance, a key component to overall flexural stiffness.

Stiffer and Lighter
The stiffness of HONYLITE sandwich structures allows boat builders to use less material, reducing weight while increasing speed and cargo capacity. Stiffness increases exponentially compared to single sheet material. The use of honeycomb core(s) creates a dramatic increase in stiffness with very little weight gain.

Save Weight and Money
HONYLITE PP Honeycomb and Aluminum Honeycomb are not only lightweight cores, they are more cost-effective than balsa and foam and do not absorb water, while Nomex® typically used in racing boats for their aerospace qualities, are extremely light, with high temperature stability for prepreg applications.

Design flexibility
Ships are designed for maximum performance, with a lower centre of gravity and a better righting moment. Design versatility with a wide range of possibilities for tailor-made constructions.

Corrosion Resistance
High resistance to fatigue as composites are rust and rot resistant.
